Thought I’d start a thread where you could share some of your favorite songs and post your own recordings.
It came to mind because I was thumbing through a songbook by Marilyn and Alan Bergman. They have written a lot of great songs, many with Marvin Hamlisch and Michel Legrand – many sung by Barbara Streisand.
As an interesting aside, they became the first songwriters to have written three of the five songs nominated for an Academy Award for ‘Best Song’: In 1983: “How Do You Keep the Music Playing?” from Best Friends, “It Might Be You” from Tootsie (with Dave Grusin), and “If We Were in Love” from Yes, Giorgio (with John Williams). “Up Where We Belong” from “An Officer and a Gentleman” won that year.
I especially like their songs with Michel Legrand. Many are often in keys you don’t see very often. Here’s some I especially like:
“What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life?” (Legrand)
“Where Do You Start?” (music by Johnny Mandel – a heartbreaking rendition was done by Susannah McCorkle)
“Little Boy Lost” – (Legrand)
“The Summer Knows” – (also Legrand) -

Hi Tom – one of my favorites too. I don’t have a dot version but it’s a pretty straightforward voicing. I have two lead sheets, one from an old, perhaps out of print, fakebook from CPP/Belwin, “The Jazz Facebook” and also a Warner Bros. publication “The Alan & Marilyn Bergman Songbook”, which has more traditional notation but the chords seem pretty accurate.
Here’s a version I did a number of years ago, although listening to it again I realize I inadvertently changed a couple melody notes in the bridge (the original is better).

There are so many. But ‘I Remember Clifford‘, by Benny Golson is a hauntingly beautiful tune that I discovered through something Suds must have said or recorded.
Here’s Arturo Sandoval absolutely killing it. Amazing. (I could do without the naff keyboard in the background mind):

You can check this link: Arturo Sandoval and other versions, Roy Hargrove for one and, interestingly, a version by Dinah Washington (who had recorded with Brown) with lyrics by Jon Hendricks. A more unconventional version was recorded by Sonny Rollins.
Clifford Brown died in a car accident in 1956 at the age of 25. Many felt he was, or soon would be, the greatest trumpeter of his generation. His close friend Benny Golson wrote this song in tribute.
From Ted Gioia’s “The Jazz Standards”:
‘Golson had earned a reputation as one of the premier composers in the idiom (hard bop). He was now determined to write a musical tribute to his departed colleague. He later described how he agonized over each note and that several weeks went by before he had put together a song that was both a fitting memorial and, even better, captured in some degree the musical personality of the late trumpeter.’
